How do I take a screenshot on my Windows computer?

Environment

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Snipping Tool
  • Snip & Sketch
  • Microsoft Edge

 

Instructions

Snipping Tool keyboard shortcut

  1. Press Windows key + Shift + S.
  2. At the top of the screen, select the type of snip you want to make (e.g. Free-form, Rectangular, Window, or Full-screen).
  3. Select the area to copy to your clipboard.
  4. Once selected, a notification will pop-up Clicking this notification will open the screenshot in Snip & Sketch.
  5. Edit and save the image from Snip & Sketch, or open a separate program in which you can save/edit/paste the image.
  6. Press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot (this will include any edits done in Snip & Sketch).

 

Using other keyboard shortcuts

Whole Screen Capture

  1. Press the Print Screen key.
  2. Open a program in which you can save/edit/paste the image.
  3. Press Ctrl + V or Click Edit > Paste.

 

Specific Window

  1. Have the window you need to capture selected.
  2. Press and hold the Alt + Print Screen.
  3. Open a program in which you can save/edit/paste the image.
  4. Press Ctrl + V or Click Edit > Paste.

 

Capture a scrolling screenshot with Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to the webpage you want to capture.
  3. Press Ctrl + Shift + S on your keyboard to initiate the Web capture panel.
  4. Click Capture the full page to take a screenshot of the entire web page.
  5. Click the  Save icon in the upper-right.
  6. In the Downloads pop-up, hover over the file name and click the Show in folder icon to access the file and open it in the desired app for editing.
