Taking a screenshot on Windows

Question

  • How do I take a screenshot on my Windows computer?
  • How do I use the Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch to capture screenshots?

Environment

  • Microsoft Windows (10 & 11)
  • Snipping Tool / Snip & Sketch
  • Microsoft Edge & Google Chrome

Instructions

1. Snipping Tool Keyboard Shortcut (Recommended)

  1. Press Windows key + Shift + S.
  2. At the top of the screen, select the snip type:
    • Rectangular: Drag a box around an object.
    • Free-form: Draw a custom shape.
    • Window: Capture a specific open window.
    • Full-screen: Capture the entire display.
  3. Once captured, a notification appears in the bottom-right. Click it to open the image in Snip & Sketch for editing.
  4. Edit and save the image, or press Ctrl + V to paste it directly into an email, document, or chat.

2. Standard Keyboard Shortcuts

Capture Entire Screen

  1. Press the Print Screen (PrtSc) key. The image is now on your clipboard.
  2. Press Ctrl + V in your desired application (Word, Paint, Outlook) to paste it.

Capture Active Window Only

  1. Click on the window you want to capture to ensure it is active.
  2. Press Alt + Print Screen.
  3. Press Ctrl + V to paste the image into your chosen program.

3. Capture a Scrolling Screenshot (Full Webpage)

Using Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the webpage in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + S to open the Web Capture panel.
  3. Select Capture full page.
  4. Click the Save icon (floppy disk) in the top-right.
  5. Access the file via the Downloads folder to view or edit.

Using Google Chrome (Developer Tools)

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + I (Windows) or Cmd + Opt + I (Mac) to open Developer Tools.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + P (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + P (Mac) to open the Command Menu.
  3. Type "screenshot" into the search bar.
  4. Select Capture full size screenshot. Chrome will automatically download the entire page as a PNG file.
