Installing LockDown Browser on an iPad

Question

How do I install Respondus LockDown Browser on my iPad?

Other Devices: If you are not using an iPad, please refer to our installation guides for Windows (opens in a new window), macOS (opens in a new window), or Chromebook (opens in a new window).

Environment

  • Device: Apple iPad (iPadOS)
  • Software: Respondus LockDown Browser

Information

The LockDown Browser app for iPad allows students to take secured exams directly on their tablet. However, please note the following requirements:

  • Instructor Permission: Your instructor must specifically enable the "Allow students to take this exam using an iPad" setting in the Respondus dashboard for your test.
  • ALEKS Users: If you are taking an exam through ALEKS, a separate setup is required. Visit the ALEKS LockDown Browser page (opens in a new window) for specific instructions.

Note: Ensure your iPad is running iOS 11 or higher before attempting the installation.

Resolution

  1. Open the App Store on your iPad and download the LockDown Browser app (opens in a new window).
  2. Locate and launch the LockDown Browser app from your home screen.
  3. The first time you open the app, you will be prompted to select your institution. Search for and select Grand Rapids Community College.
  4. The app will then load the MyGRCC login page. Enter your MyGRCC username and password.
  5. Once logged in, navigate to your course within Canvas and select the assessment to begin your test.

Pro Tip: Before starting an actual exam, we recommend completing a "Practice Quiz" (if provided by your instructor) to ensure the iPad app is communicating correctly with Canvas.
