Question
How do I manage my folders in Gmail?
Environment
Information
In other email programs, you may have stored email in folders. In Gmail, you use labels to categorize your email. Labels are like folders, but with a twist — you can apply several labels to a single email, then later find that email by clicking any of its labels from the left panel.
You can also:
- Open a label in the left sidebar to see all email with that label.
- Nest labels within other labels (similar to subfolders).
- Search for all email with a specific label.
- Set up your inbox as you prefer:
- See labels on email in your inbox to quickly identify different categories.
- Auto-archive email to route it away from your inbox using filters.
Resolution
1. Create a Label via Settings
- In the top right, click the Settings (gear icon).
- Click See all settings.
- Click the Labels tab.
- Scroll to the Labels section and click Create new label.
- Enter the label name and click Create.
- Note: You can also check the box for Nest label under to create a sub-label.
2. Create a Label Directly from an Email
- While viewing an email, click the Labels icon (resembles a physical tag) in the top toolbar.
- Click Create new.
- Enter the label name and click Create.
- (Optional) Click Nest label under and choose an existing label to place it under.
- The new label is automatically applied to the current email.
