How do I get the best experience when working with the virtual labs through VMWare?

Question

How do I get the best experience when working with the virtual labs through VMWare?

Environment

  • VMWare
  • ATC Open Lab
  • Student Virtual Lab
  • Adobe Remote Lab

Answer

GRCC provides students access to licensed software through the virtual desktop platform, VMWare Horizon. This allows students to use designated software for academic purposes from any location with an internet connection, offering remote access via a full Windows desktop environment on personal devices.

To access the virtual computer lab from off-campus, you will need to use VMWare Horizon. Please visit the knowledge base for set-up and use instructions.

For the best experience:

  • Use a computer or laptop as compared to a tablet or phone

  • Ensure a minimum internet connection speed of 150-200 Mbps

  • Opt for the desktop version of VMware over the in-browser instance to minimize latency issues

  • If using the in-browser version, review the minimum system requirements for HTML Access.

  • In case of difficulties with the VM, the labs are available in our ATC and Library computer labs

  • Save your work frequently to Google Cloud storage using the virtual desktop’s web browser or your connected device

    • Users will not be connected to the same desktop each time you log in and each desktop is refreshed upon session termination

For any issues, contact IT through the Support portal or call 616-234-4357. Assistance with personally-owned devices will be provided on a best effort basis and during normal business hours.
