Question
How do I copy (import) a course in Canvas?
Environment
Information
Blackboard referred to this process as "Course Copy," while Canvas calls it "Import." The key difference is that in Canvas, you start in the destination course and import content in. In Blackboard, you began in the source course and pushed content out to the destination course.
Answer
- Locate your destination course.
- On the right-side of the course home page, click Import Existing Content.
- Click Select Content Type drop-down menu and choose Copy a Canvas Course.
- In the Search for a course field, type the name of the source course.
- Under Content choose Select specific content.
- Choosing All Content may create duplicate content in your destination courses.
- Click + Add to Import Queue.
- Underneath Content imports, locate the recent course copy from the queue and choose Select content.
- Import Modules, Assignments, Quizzes, etc. as a whole group or expand the groups with the drop-down arrow to select specific Modules, Assignments, Quizzes, or other content.
- Note: Avoid copying the Start Here: Orientation Module as most semester-based and template courses will have this included in the course shell.
- Click Select Content again to begin the import process.
- It may take a few minutes for course materials to import if there is a lot of content.
Additional Information
- Run the link validator to check for broken links before publishing the course.
- Bulk update assignment due dates.
- If importing from a course template, update your course Home Page to display the correct front page.
- From the destination course Home Page, click Choose Home Page > select Pages Front Page, then click the Change link. Locate and select your home page from the template.
- More information on this process can be found by viewing this article from Canvas.
