Loaner Laptop Vending Machine: Checkout Failed Error Explained

Issue

When attempting to check out a laptop from the vending machine, students encounter the error message:
"Checkout failed: cash - limit of $XX.XX USD exceeded. User has $XX.XX USD."

Environment

  • GRCC Loaner Laptop Vending Machines
  • Located at Main Campus or Lakeshore Campus in Holland, MI.

Information

The error occurs when students try to check out a loaner laptop but have exceeded the financial or loan limits set by the library system due to an unreturned loaner laptop from a previous semester. This results in a hold being placed on their account.

Resolution

  • Verify the Error Message:
Confirm the student is receiving the message:
"Checkout failed: cash - limit of $XX.XX USD exceeded. User has $XX.XX USD."

  • Instruct the Student to Contact the Library:
Inform the student that the error is related to a hold on their account due to an unreturned loaner laptop. Direct them to contact the library to resolve the hold and return or address the overdue laptop.

  • Update Library Records:
Once the student has resolved the issue with the library (e.g., returned the laptop, paid overdue fees), the hold will be lifted, and they will be able to check out a new laptop from the vending machine.

Cause

The student has an unreturned loaner laptop from a previous semester, resulting in a hold being placed on their account by the library. This hold prevents them from borrowing additional laptops until the issue is resolved.
