Fake Anti-Virus Sites / Scare Ware

Information

Often users will click links directing them to fake anti-virus scan site pop-ups not looking at the actual site address in the results. This also happens when clicking on a Sponsored Ad.

Environment

  • Web Browsers
  • Yahoo Search

 

Process

  1. Close down browser WITHOUT clicking any links on the page
    • Completed by one of the following:
      • Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and selecting the Task Manager to close the affected browser
      • Press Ctrl+W (Command+W) closing the tab
      • Press Alt+F4 (Command+Q) closing the application
      • Press Alt+Left Arrow (Option+Left Arrow) navigating a page back
  2. Reopen the browser WITHOUT restoring any pages or tabs
  3. Clear your Cache and Cookies
  4. Check the saved links or bookmarks for malicious additions to the saved link
  5. Continue browsing the web safely.
