Enroll in Google MFA (2-Step Verification)

Information

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), also known as 2-Step Verification in Google, adds an extra layer of security by requiring something you know (your password) and something you have (like your phone or a security key). This helps protect your Google Workspace account from unauthorized access — even if your password is compromised.

Environment

  • Google Workspace

Process

  1. Go to Google Account Home (opens in a new window) (opens in a new window)
    • Sign in with your Google credentials if prompted.
  2. On the left sidebar, click Security & sign-in.
  3. Under the “How you sign in to Google” section, click 2-Step Verification.
  4. Click Get Started.
    • Re-enter your password when prompted.
  5. Choose Your 2-Step/MFA options:
    • Security Key (for high-security environments)
    • Backup Codes
    • Text message or phone call (less secure)
    • Authenticator App (like Google Authenticator or Authy)
    • Google Prompt (most common and easiest – push notification to phone)
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions for each method you choose.
  7. After setup, test the login once to confirm MFA is working correctly.
