Java - Information / License Request

Introduction

Earlier this year, Oracle announced changes regarding the way Java software is licensed within commercial organizations. This software has always been a free software title and is currently installed on all college computers. In January 2019, Oracle will release the last public update for Java. In order to continue receiving security patches, the college will need to purchase a subscription license for each user. Please use the form attached to submit requests to review software your department is using that may utilize Java. If you already know that software your department uses is utilizing Java, you may use the same form to submit requests for licenses.

Key Dates

  • December 13 - January 2019 - Users may request exemption from Java removal or request software to be reviewed for Java utilization.
  • May 2019 - WebNow will be upgraded to eDocs which will no longer require Java.
  • May 2019 - Java will be uninstalled from all faculty and staff computers. Classrooms and users with exemptions will be excluded. Users may request to install the new version from the software center if needed after the uninstall.
  • August 2019 - Java will be handled as an Instructional Software Request and will only be installed in labs where it is required for Fall 2019.
