Under the direction of the facility building manager, the Head Custodian position is responsible for the overall maintenance and cleanliness of assigned GRCC facility(s). It is the responsibility of the Head Custodian to ensure that the facilities are maintained in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety. The Head Custodian is responsible for coordinating work and overseeing tasks of other custodians, including full and part-time employees, student workers, and third-party cleaners. Safety, cleanliness and continued efficiency of operation shall be a major goal at all times.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintain knowledge of all cleaning activities within the assigned facility
- Maintain knowledge regarding all types of floor surfaces ranging from carpet removal or initial cleaning to floor finishing
- Knowledgeable of all safety and security procedures affecting their assigned facility
- Distinguish between general maintenance and emergent situations, including mitigation procedures. Examples include:
- Properly use, care for, and provide minor maintenance to all custodial equipment
- Forecast and order custodial supplies and materials
- Monitor and submit time sheets, work order requests, etc., for custodians, staff, faculty, and student workers
- Communicate and interface effectively with college personnel, students, visitors, and individuals entering and using campus facilities
- Train custodians in all day-to-day maintenance activities, maintenance programs, equipment, etc. and provide proper guidance in accomplishing their tasks
- Provide concise and effective written and oral direction as it pertains to guidance of work tasks and goals
- Open and secure facilities
- Utilize appropriate cleaning agents/chemicals and techniques for each floor or other type of surface (i.e. what to use on fabrics, floors, counters, chalk/white boards, etc.)
- Basic knowledge of all campus buildings
- Snow plowing via Kubota
- Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Educational Credentials
- A minimum of a high school degree or GED diploma required
Work Experience
- Demonstrated ability of providing leadership, supervision, and guidance
- Knowledgeable of all cleaning techniques
- Knowledgeable of cleaning supplies and their appropriate application and finish
- Knowledgeable of cleaning agents for chemicals for each floor type or surface (i.e. what to use on fabrics, floors, counters, chalk/white boards, etc.)
- Knowledge of floor finishes (wood, terrazzo, soft and hard tile), and floor finish (and cleaning) equipment operation and use
- Knowledge of what to do in case of an emergency (when to use blood borne pathogens accurate clean up processes, fill out accident report(s) etc.)
- Demonstrate and maintain minimum absenteeism
- Knowledge of general safety and security practices as related to personal, facility, and equipment protection
Skills
- Must be able to use a variety of carpet extractors (walk behind/push-pull), Taski dry foam swing scrubbers, operate all floor hand rotary and vibrating scrubbers, operate wet vacuums, use 4', 6', 8', and 10' ladders, use carpet bonnet machines, use and have knowledge of all cleaning chemicals and dispensing systems, gas and electric power sprayers, all general use custodial equipment such as mops, buckets, brooms, dusters, etc., operate snow blowers, use salt spreaders, use man lifts and pallet jacks, do light electrical and plumbing work using pliers, use screwdrivers, plungers, etc., and be able to drive a vehicle
- Maintain good attendance and be punctual when arriving to and leaving work
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing via email. Have the ability to provide customer service to faculty, staff, students and the general public
- Be able to work independently
- Be able to adjust to a flexible and changing schedule
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license
- Must be punctual and have good attendance record
- Must be able to pick up, lift and dump receptacles/containers into dumpsters that are at a minimum of 4.5 feet above ground level

- Must be able to comprehend and follow manufacturer's information and directions
- Must be able and willing to take Job Enrichment Classes, seminars, etc.
- The ability to work with a variety of college staff personnel
- The ability to provide customer service to faculty, staff, students and the general public
- Annually complete up to 20 hours of professional development training (College provided)
