Information
When a Chromebook is managed by an organization, the standard "Powerwash" feature in the settings menu may be disabled. To perform a factory reset (Powerwash) and remove organizational management from the device, the user must manually trigger Developer Mode.
Account Management Warning: A personal Chromebook may automatically become "managed" if a @grcc.edu account is used as the primary device owner account during initial setup.
Process Limitation: This manual override does not always work. In some cases, a device is hardware-locked to an organization and must be manually released from the management console by the IT Infrastructure team.
Environment
Process
Performing these steps will erase all data stored locally on the Chromebook.
- At the sign-in screen, press and hold the ESC + REFRESH (circular arrow) keys, then tap the POWER button.
- When the recovery screen appears (usually showing a yellow exclamation point or "Please insert a recovery USB stick"), press CTRL + D simultaneously.
- A prompt will ask to confirm entering Developer Mode. Press Enter if prompted, or press CTRL + D again when the screen displays "OS Verification is off."
- The transition to Developer Mode will take several minutes. Do not turn off the device during this time.
- Once the process is complete, the computer will reboot. It has now been "powerwashed" and should no longer be managed by the organization.
Note: Upon reboot, you may see a screen warning that "OS Verification is off." This is normal for Developer Mode. You can usually press Space to return the device to its secure, verified state after the reset is successful.
