Installing Google Chat

Information

Instructions for installing the standalone app on your computer.

Environment

• Google Chat
• Windows 10
• MacOS

Process

Install the standalone app on your computer using 1 of 3 methods:

Option 1

1. Sign in to chat.google.com.
2. Click Download on popup
   • Popup may appear shortly after you first use Google Chat

Option 2

1. Sign in to chat.google.com.
2. Click  at the top right corner
3. Click Install Google Chat.

Option 3

1. Sign in to chat.google.com.
2. Click (Install) in the URL bar at the top right corner
3. Click Install 

Tips

• If you already created a Google Chrome shortcut to chat.google.com, the standalone app automatically installs. You won't have the option to manually install the app.
• To open the app from Google Chrome, in the address bar, enter chrome://apps and click Google Chat.

Open the standalone app automatically at startup

1. On your computer, open Chrome.
2. In the address bar, enter chrome://apps.
3. Right-click on the Chat standalone app .
4. Select Start App When You Sign In.

Uninstall the standalone app on Mac or Windows

1. On your computer, open Chrome.
2. In the address bar, enter chrome://apps.
3. Right-click on the Chat standalone app .
4. Select Remove from Chrome and then Remove.
