Installing Google Chat

Information

The Google Chat standalone application provides a dedicated window for your conversations, making it easier to stay connected without keeping a browser tab open. This guide covers installation and management on desktop systems.

Process

Install the Standalone App

You can install the app using any of the following three methods while signed into your account.

Option 1: The Initial Popup

  1. Sign in to chat.google.com (opens in a new window).
  2. If a "Download the desktop app" popup appears, click Download.
    • Note: This prompt usually appears shortly after you first begin using Google Chat in the browser.

Option 2: Settings Menu

  1. Sign in to chat.google.com (opens in a new window).
  2. Click the Settings/More icon (three vertical dots) at the top right of the browser interface.
  3. Select Install Google Chat from the list.

Option 3: Browser URL Bar

  1. Sign in to chat.google.com (opens in a new window).
  2. Look at the far right of the Chrome address bar (URL bar). Click the Install icon Install Google Chat icon.
  3. Click Install to confirm.

Pro Tip: If you have previously created a Chrome shortcut to the Chat website, the app may already be installed. You can check by typing chrome://apps into your address bar.

Manage the Application

Open Automatically at Startup

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. In the address bar, type chrome://apps and press Enter.
  3. Right-click the Google Chat icon Google Chat logo.
  4. Select Start App When You Sign In.

Uninstall the App

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. In the address bar, type chrome://apps and press Enter.
  3. Right-click the Google Chat icon.
  4. Select Remove from Chrome... and click Remove to confirm.
