Question
How do I cross-list my course in Canvas?
Environment
- Canvas (Learning Management System)
Information
Instructors teaching multiple sections of the same course may prefer to manage all students from a single course shell. This process is called cross-listing. Ideally, sections should be combined in PeopleSoft before the Canvas shells are created; however, if the shells already exist, you can manually cross-list them in Canvas.
Answer
Warning: Cross-listing should be done before students begin submitting work. Once a course is cross-listed, you cannot access student submissions from the original "child" course shell.
Step 1: Set Course Dates
Navigate to both courses (the one you are moving and the one you are keeping) to ensure the dates are set:
- Click Settings in the Course Navigation menu.
- Click the Sections tab.
- Click on the Section Name link.
- Click the Edit Section button on the right.
- Verify or add the Start and End Dates.
- Click Update Section.
Step 2: Perform the Cross-Listing
- Go to the course shell you want to move (the "child" course, e.g., MA133.2122).
- In the Course Navigation Menu, click on Settings.
- Click the Sections tab.
- Click on the Section Name.
- On the right-hand sidebar, click the Cross-List this Section button.
- In the "Search for Course" field, type the name of the parent course (the shell you want to keep, e.g., MA133.1500) and select it when it appears.
- Click Cross-List this Section to confirm the move.
