Canvas Course Types

Information

There are three different course types in Canvas.

Course Types

  1. Sandbox Course – An empty course shell that instructors can use to experiment with Canvas. (e.g., First and Last Name Sandbox)
  2. Course Template – A course shell used to develop courses for live instruction, with a predefined template design structure included. (e.g., USERNAME.TEMPLATE)
  3. Live Course – Semester-based courses used for teaching that include students. These courses are automatically created based on instructor assignments in PeopleSoft. (e.g., EN101.W25)
