Installing Active Directory and Other RSAT Tools

This article describes how to install Active Directory (AD) for IT technician use. This is most commonly performed on their assigned devices for management and troubleshooting purposes.

  • Requires administrator credentials

Environment

  • Windows 11

Process

  1. Log into the targeted Windows PC with Administrator credentials
  2. Open the Settings app
  3. Navigate to System > Optional Features > Add a feature
  4. Search for "RSAT"
  5. Select the check box for RSAT: Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services
  6. Select Add
  7. Search the Start menu to verify the following tools are now available:
    • Active Directory Users and Computers
    • Active Directory Administrative Center
  8. Open MMC (Microsoft Management Console).
  9. Add the AD Users and Computers snap-in by navigating to File > Add/Remove Snap-in… or pressing Ctrl+M.
