Apple Devices - How to Check for Updates

Question

How do I know if my Apple device is up to date, and how do I manually run updates?

Environment

  • macOS: MacBooks, iMacs, Mac Minis
  • iOS / iPadOS: iPhones and iPads

Information

Security Best Practice: Keeping your devices updated is one of the most effective ways to protect your data from security vulnerabilities. Apple regularly releases updates to fix bugs and patch security holes.

While Apple devices typically notify you when an update is available, you can always check manually to ensure you are running the latest version. For a complete list of the latest releases, visit the official Apple Security Updates page (opens in a new window).

GRCC Device Note: College-owned Apple devices receive updates shortly after they are released by Apple. To ensure your device receives these prompts, please connect regularly to the GRCC Network (on-campus or via VPN).

Process

For macOS (MacBooks and Desktops)

  1. Click the Apple Menu () in the top-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions).
  3. In the sidebar on the left, click General.
  4. Click Software Update on the right.
  5. The Mac will automatically check for available updates. If one is found, click Update Now or Upgrade Now.

For iOS and iPadOS (iPhones and iPads)

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. If an update is available, tap Download and Install.

Pro Tip: We recommend enabling Automatic Updates within these menus so your device can download and install critical security responses overnight while charging.
