Issue:
Is public Wifi safe to use with GRCC systems?
Environment:
- Omnissa Horizon (VMWare)
- PeopleSoft
- Gmail
Information:
Using public Wi-Fi always comes with risks. Using your own personal mobile hotspot or a Virtual Private Network (VPN) is always the most secure option. That being said, GRCC has other security measures in place to help protect your data—such as built-in encryption when you browse websites and check email, or Omnissa Horizon (VMware) (opens in a new window)—for times when public Wi-Fi is your only choice.
If you must use public Wi-Fi, please remain vigilant and keep these safety tips in mind:
- Check the Web Address. Always look at the address bar at the top of your browser to ensure you are on the actual website you intended to visit.
- Watch for Strange Pop-ups. If a pop-up appears asking you to accept an unfamiliar "certificate" or security permission, treat it as suspicious and decline it.
- Beware of Slow Loading Times. If a webpage takes an unusually long time to load, it could be a sign that someone is trying to intercept your connection. In these cases, it is best to disconnect and find a different network.
- Consider the Network Provider. Think about who owns the Wi-Fi. A large institution like a hospital or a bank likely has much stronger security controls in place than a local, "mom-and-pop" restaurant.
