Dell dock not charging/displaying image on monitor

This article contains basic troubleshooting steps for Dell laptops that are not charging/displaying an image on an external monitor while connected to a docking station.

Issue

Dell laptops that are connected to a docking station are doing one of the following:

  • Not charging the laptop.
  • Not displaying an image on the external monitor.
  • Indicating that the power being supplied is insufficient for the device.
  • Having USB Port issues.
  • Office monitor flickering.

Environment

  • Dell laptops
  • Dell docking stations

Resolution

  1. Unplug the USB-C docking station connector cable from laptop.
  2. Unplug the power from the back of the docking station. (This is the round cord all the way to the left.)
    • Wait at least 15 seconds.
  3. Reattach the power cable to the docking station.
  4. Reattach the USB-C docking station cable to the laptop.
