How do I bring over my own course content to Canvas from Blackboard?

 

Environment

  • Canvas
  • Blackboard

 

Information

Courses are being migrated from Blackboard on a rolling basis to allow faculty and staff time to prepare. Teaching in Canvas will begin at the start of the Fall 2025 semester.

Completed Migrations

  • Summer 2024 credit courses – Migrated on Oct. 30, 2024
  • Workforce and Job Training 2023/2024 courses – Migrated on Oct. 30, 2024
  • Non-semester course templates, portfolios, & organizations – Migrated in Nov. 2024
  • Fall 2024 credit courses – Migrated at the end of Jan. 2025

Upcoming Migrations

  • Workforce and Job Training 2024/2025 courses – Migrated at the end of April 2025
  • Winter 2025 credit courses – Migrate by end of May 2025
  • Summer 2025 credit courses – Migrate by end of Sept. 2025

Full Transition to Canvas

  • August 19, 2025 will be the last day to access Blackboard. As of August 20, 2025 all courses will be hosted by Canvas.

 

Answer

If you need course content in Canvas from before Summer 2024, you will need to manually export it from Blackboard and import it into Canvas. Instructions for exporting from Blackboard can be found here.

If you would like to import your Blackboard content into a course template, you can use your existing USERNAME.TEMPLATE course or request a new template.
