Question

What software can I use to check the accessibility of documents?

Environment

  • Windows
  • macOS

Answer

Accessibility During Creation

The primary productivity suites used at GRCC include built-in checkers. These tools help you identify issues like missing alt-text, poor color contrast, or incorrect heading structures while you are still drafting your document.

Post-Creation & PDF Verification

If you are working with finalized documents or PDFs, the following specialized tools are available to faculty and staff:

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro: This is the industry standard for verifying and "remediating" (fixing) PDF accessibility.
  • Anthology Ally (Canvas): A dedicated accessibility tool integrated directly into the Blackboard/Canvas environment.

Accessibility Tip: It is significantly easier to fix accessibility issues in the original source document (Word or Google Docs) before exporting to PDF.
