Information
Sending on behalf of a Google Group allows the user sending the post to remain anonymous to the users of that group. This is particularly useful for notification groups that send all-staff type messages.
Environment
Process
Enable the Send-As Setting
- Navigate to Google Group
- Select Group Settings in line with desired Group
- Scroll down to Who can post as group, select the appropriate members.
- For all-staff type groups, Group managers would be the appropriate role to select.
- Click Save changes
Set up Send As the Group with your Gmail account
- Navigate to your Gmail inbox.
- Click Settings
- Click See all settings
- Click the Accounts tab at the top
- Under Send mail as:, click Add another email address
- In the window that pops up, enter the name of the group and its email address
- Check the box Treat as an alias
- Click Next step
- Click the Send verification button to receive an email confirmation. This message will go to the Google Group
- Close the window
- Return to your Google Group (or your Gmail inbox if your Google Group subscription is set to email you) to click the verification link. Click the confirm button.
Send As the Group
- Navigate to your Gmail inbox.
- Click Compose
- In the From drop-down box, select the group email address
- Add recipients to the CC or BCC fields
- Type your subject and message, and click Send
Your email will now show up in users inboxes as being sent from the name of your group.
Note: If your group is set to only allow managers to post to the group, as is the case in all-staff notification groups, anyone who replies to the email will get a bounce back stating they do not have the permissions to post to the group. Because of this, it's a good idea to include a reply address in the message body or email footer (Settings > Email Options > Include a custom footer.)
