Session Overview

This session, led by Provost Dr. Sheila Jones, focused on aligning departmental planning with GRCC’s 2023–2028 Strategic Plan. The presentation emphasized the importance of collaboration, sustainability, and realistic goal-setting, while also recognizing M-TEC 101 as a model for onboarding and cross-college knowledge sharing.

College Strategic Plan Overview

  • GRCC’s five strategic goals (2023–2028):
    • Teaching and Learning
    • Completion and Transfer
    • Equity
    • Community Impact
    • Infrastructure and Sustainability
  • Department plans must connect to one or more of these goals.
  • The plan is a “living document”—priorities remain stable, but initiatives can adapt.
  • Departments should reflect both internal needs and external partnerships.
  • The Strategic Initiative Dashboard provides real-time tracking of progress.
  • Goals are approved by the Board of Trustees to ensure alignment.

Academic and Student Affairs Structure

  • Five Schools: Workforce Training, Business & Industry, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, STEM.
  • Additional Departments: Curriculum support, Registrar, tutoring, multicultural affairs, advising, athletics, financial aid, student retention.
  • Leadership Roles:
    • Jennifer Batten – Instructional Support & Institutional Planning.
      • Associate Provost of Student Affairs – Advising, counseling, enrollment, multicultural affairs, student life.
    • Dean of Strategic Outreach (Dave Selmon), supported by Interim Associate Dean Marisol Blanco.
  • Structure reflects the “One College” model, encouraging collaboration.

Department Planning Process

  • Timeline: Plans now align with the academic year, not budget cycle.
  • Components: Departmental priorities, operational goals, and issues framed as opportunities for improvement.
  • Flexibility: Plans may be revised mid-year.
  • Inclusivity: Plans must represent all roles and responsibilities.
  • Deadlines:
    • Kickoff: September 12, 2025.
    • Submission: October 30, 2025.

Key Themes from the Provost

  • One College Model: Collaboration across schools and departments is essential.
  • Sustainability: Planning should address infrastructure, staffing, technology, and space (including ADA accessibility).
  • Teaching and Learning: The foundation of all goals.
  • Equity, Economic Mobility, and Access: Central to workforce and student success.
  • Right-Sizing Goals: Focus on one or two meaningful, achievable outcomes.

Role of M-TEC 101 as a Model

  • Recognized as an effective practice for onboarding new staff.
  • Shares institutional knowledge across teams.
  • Demonstrates collaboration that can be replicated in other areas.
  • Achievements from M-TEC 101 should be documented as models for success.

Closing Remarks

  • Department planning is both a compliance requirement and an opportunity.
  • Staff should align personal performance goals with departmental objectives.
  • Leadership encouraged teams to “brag a little” and share successes.
  • The process is designed to empower departments and advance GRCC’s mission.
