FAFSA 2024-25: Spouse and Parent Contributor Requirements
Question
Does a spouse or parent need to access the 2024-25 FAFSA if they are not a contributor?
Answer
It depends. NASFAA has confirmed with the U.S. Department of Education (ED) that there are two required questions for a spouse even if they are not a required contributor. These involve identity and contact information. Completion of these questions depends on whether you are using a paper or online form.
Paper FAFSA (FAFSA PDF)
- Dependent Students: If parents are married and filed a joint tax return, one parent completes the parent section (including consent, approval, and signature). The other spouse must complete the identity and contact information (Questions 42 and 43) but skips all remaining sections.
- Independent Students: If a student is married and filed jointly, the spouse must complete the identity and contact information (Questions 25 and 26) but skips all remaining sections.
Online FAFSA
The online process differs slightly for dependent students. The student will either:
- Provide both parents' identity and contact information (though only one is invited as a contributor); or
- Provide only one parent's identity and contact information.
In the second scenario, the contributing parent will be prompted to provide their spouse's identity and contact information during their portion of the form. If they filed a joint tax return, the spouse will not be invited to contribute to the FAFSA.
Similarly, a married independent student provides their spouse's identity and contact information, but the spouse is not invited as a contributor if they filed a joint tax return.
Note: Even if you are asked to provide a spouse's email address, that spouse will not receive an email invitation if they are not a required contributor.
