Maximum Credit Hours per Semester

Question

What is the maximum number of credits a student is allowed to take per semester?

Environment

  • Office of the Registrar

Information

At Grand Rapids Community College, students are permitted to self-enroll in up to 20 credits per semester (Fall, Winter, or Summer).

Answer

If you wish to enroll in more than 20 credit hours in a single semester, you must obtain formal approval. Requests are evaluated based on your academic history and cumulative GPA. Note that Dual Enrollment students have lower credit hour maximums and should talk to their High School counselor or the Dual Enrollment office (616 234 3007) for such information.

How to Request an Exception

To inquire about enrollment beyond the 20-credit limit, please follow the instructions on the Maximum Credit Hour Request page (opens in a new window).

Typically, the process involves:

  • Meeting with an Academic Advisor to discuss your course load.
  • Submitting a formal request form to the Associate Dean of Student Success.
