Question
How do I automatically import final grades from my Canvas course into the Online Faculty Center?
Environment
Information
Grade passback allows faculty to import final grades from Canvas into the Online Faculty Center reducing the need to enter each student grade manually.
Answer
Note: Using grade passback is optional. Faculty may still enter grades manually into the Online Faculty Center.
Step 1: Verify Final Grades in Canvas
First, double-check that your final grades are calculated correctly in your Canvas gradebook. Grade passback looks at the grades in the Total column. Keep in mind that Canvas ignores ungraded assignments when calculating the total grade. (For example, if a student skipped the final exam and you left the grade blank, Canvas will just skip it instead of counting it as a zero.) To avoid this, manually enter a zero for any missing work.
Step 2: Verify Your Grading Scheme is Enabled
Canvas needs a grading scheme to convert that final percentage into a letter grade. Here is how to make sure yours is turned on:
- Go into your course and click Settings.
- On the Course Details tab, scroll down to Grading Scheme.
- Check the status of Enable course grading scheme:
- If the box IS checked: Verify that the correct scheme is active. You may see a department scheme (set up by IT) or a custom scheme copied over from a previous course.
- If the box IS NOT checked: Check the box, click Set Grading Scheme, and select the scheme that matches your syllabus. If you don't have a custom or department option, select Grading Scheme A-E (93% - 100 - A).
For more information, check out the guides on how to add a grading scheme or view and manage grading schemes.
Step 3: Import Final Grades
- Log in to the Online Center.
- From the drop-down menu in the upper left, click Faculty Self-Service.
- Click the Faculty Center tile.
- Click on Grade Roster from the menu to the left.
- Click anywhere inside the course information box to select the test course.

- Click the Import Grades button in the upper left corner. All grades should then be automatically filled in under the Roster Grade column. You still have the ability to make adjustments after the import or make adjustments in Canvas and import again. Note: Last Attended date is located in the upper right corner.

- Click Save. The grades should now populate automatically in the Roster Grade column.
- When you're ready to post the final grades for students, make sure to adjust the Approved Status to Approved.
Note: If any grade adjustments are needed, you can still change them in the Grade Roster page or make the adjustment in the Canvas gradebook and re-import the grades.
Additional Information
To manually adjust a student’s final grade, use the Final Grade Override column in Canvas. Grade passback uses the calculated Total column by default, but if data is present in the Override column, it will pull from that column instead. For detailed steps, check out the guide on how to override a student's final grade in the gradebook.
