Question
How do I access SpeedGrader on a concluded/read-only course in Canvas?
Environment
Information
Canvas courses automatically transition to read-only mode when the course end date has passed. When a course is concluded or read-only, instructor access is limited. While grades remain visible in the Gradebook, some navigation options—such as direct SpeedGrader links from individual student grades—are no longer available. This can give the impression that SpeedGrader is inaccessible, even though student submissions can still be viewed.
Answer
SpeedGrader remains accessible in concluded or read-only courses, but it must be accessed using specific navigation paths.
Option 1: Access SpeedGrader from the Assignment
- Navigate to the Canvas course.
- Select Assignments from the course menu.
- Click the name of the assignment you want to review.
- Click SpeedGrader on the assignment page to view student submissions.
Option 2: Access SpeedGrader from the Gradebook
- Open Grades in the course.
- Locate the column for the desired assignment.
- Click the three-dot (⋮) menu in the assignment column header.
- Select SpeedGrader.
Notes
- The SpeedGrader button is not available when clicking directly on an individual student’s grade in the Gradebook for read-only courses.
- This behavior is expected once a course has passed its end date and is not related to instructor permissions.
- If submissions need to be retained long-term, download or export files after accessing them.
- If SpeedGrader is still unavailable after following these steps, contact IT or TLDE.
