How do I hide inactive students from my class roster in Canvas?

Answer
Using Differentiation Tags to Hide Inactive Students
To set up a tag to show only your active students, click People in your course navigation menu. Then:
- Click Manage Tags and then click Get Started from the menu that appears on the right.
- Name your new tag and click Save.
- Check the box next to each of your active students, click Tag As and select your created tag.
Then, to show only your active students, click the dropdown at the top of the People index and click on your tag. This will hide any student who is not tagged as Active, removing the inactive students from your People view.
For detailed instructions with screenshots, see Canvas’s guide to Differentiation Tags.
If Students Re-Enroll
Note that Differentiation Tags are static, meaning they will not change if a student’s status changes. If a student re-enrolls, you will need to manually tag them as Active for them to show up in your list of tagged Active students.
Other Uses for Differentiation Tags
Differentiation Tags can also be applied to assign differentiated content to specific students (or subsets of students) in your courses, or to quickly and flexibly group students for accommodations or alternate due dates. See Canvas’s FAQ on Differentiation Tags here, including some potential reasons why you might use these tags.
