The Executive Director works collaboratively with the academic and student affairs leadership, both staff and faculty, of Grand Rapids Community College to develop a strategic vision and plan for faculty professional development and distance education at the College. The Executive Director provides leadership and oversight of GRCC’s Teaching, Learning, and Distance Education (TLDE) unit.
The Executive Director serves on the Deans’ Council, Strategic Leadership Team, and the Academic Governing Council. The Executive Director collaborates closely with all stakeholders involved in faculty professional development and distance education, including, but not limited to, Human Resources, Information Technology, Student Financial Services, Distance Learning Faculty Advisory Board, and Faculty Professional Development Advisory Team.

Provides College-level leadership for the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of faculty professional development and distance education programming and initiatives

In accordance with College governance structures, develops policies and processes related to faculty professional development and distance education

Works collaboratively with academic deans, unit staff and faculty, unit college-wide teams, and related areas to create and facilitate faculty professional development that supports full- and part-time faculty throughout their GRCC careers

Provides input into which courses and programs should be offered and developed for distance education

Works collaboratively with academic deans and faculty to develop distance learning standards and to ensure high-quality online teaching and curricula

Works collaboratively with academic deans to develop plans for the evaluation of faculty teaching with technology

Works collaboratively with Information Technology to assess and coordinate updates to the College’s Learning Management System, as well as other instructional/media technologies

Works collaboratively with student success leaders to ensure that online students have access to orientation and ongoing support services

Communicates the work of the unit to the College; updates stakeholder groups as needed

Serves as the primary campus advocate around issues related to faculty professional development and high-quality teaching, learning, and distance education practices. This includes assuming leadership in these areas and participating in the following campus-wide teams, committees, and/or governing bodies: Academic Governing Council (non-voting representative), Deans’ Council, Distance Learning Faculty Advisory Board, Ethics Team, Faculty Professional Development Advisory Team, Learning Environment Team, and Strategic Leadership Team, including Strategic Initiatives and/or College Action Project Teams, as appropriate

Assists academic departments in their development, implementation, and tracking of professional development activities

Works collaboratively with unit staff and faculty to create and facilitate faculty professional development related to distance education and instructional technology, and to develop and maintain a system to provide trouble-shooting and drop-in support for faculty using distance education technologies.

Provides leadership for the certification and recertification of faculty teaching in distance education environments.

Leads the work to ensure the efficient and effective operations of all processes related to the unit

Ensures that the work of TLDE meets or surpasses all of the following: College policy mandates, state and federal reporting requirements, accreditation standards, copyright laws, GRCC intellectual property guidelines, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements

Remains current with best practices and new developments in faculty professional development and distance education

Leads the collaborative effort to set direction for the College’s learning management system and other instructional/media technologies

Monitors and responds to faculty and student satisfaction with TLDE programming and technology

Collects appropriate data and prepares reports for internal and external audiences related to the unit, including the evaluation of outcomes and impact of TLDE using attendance data and surveys, as appropriate

Creates annual TLDE department plan

Prepares and submits annual Teaching and Learning Quality Model (TLQM) report(s) related to the TLDE unit

Manages the budgets of the TLDE unit

Supervises and evaluates staff in the unit, including faculty members receiving equated overload/release time to support professional development and distance education programming, systems, and processes

Fully utilizes existing TLDE physical spaces and use virtual spaces to create a unit that is welcoming and supportive to all faculty members and that encourages interaction, collaboration, and community among faculty members across the College

Serves as the College’s liaison and representative locally, statewide, and nationally in matters pertaining to faculty professional development and distance education, including but not limited to Michigan Colleges Online (MCO) and National Council-State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA)

Collaborates with unit faculty and staff to coordinate or promote faculty recognition awards and events

Maintains unit website and related forms

Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position
