The Infrastructure Technician plays a crucial role on the Information Technology Infrastructure team by installing, maintaining and participating in the design of low voltage and optic data cables. This position is responsible for the installation of new data cabling, maintaining the existing cable plant, which includes testing, inspection and maintaining I.T. spaces according to the BICSI standards. They will also assist with College projects that have infrastructure components by attending design and status meetings along with site visits to ensure work is being completed to BICSI standards. In addition, they maintain the Code Blue security devices at the College to help ensure the physical security of our students and staff, along with assisting engineers with Wireless deployment and surveys to provide high quality Wi-Fi connectivity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Meet with customers to determine the data cable needs for a job
-
Design pathways and spaces for telecommunications on blueprints in the design phase communicate with the electrical engineer and architect on what is needed
-
Use Ekahau devices to complete wireless surveys of all College facilities
-
Help determine location and deployment of College wireless infrastructure
-
Assist College teams in the design of Code Blue infrastructure

Maintain and repair Code Blue devices

Advanced troubleshooting of copper and fiber optic components
-
Work with the Facilities department on construction projects to complete or assist in:
-
Design of network/data cable paths and locations
-
Coordinate with Project Manager and/or Contractor to ensure that installation is performed to BICSI standards and meets our specifications

Help identify potential issues or concerns and works to resolve them
-
MAC work (Moves/Adds/Changes) for cabling
-
Terminate / Repair fiber optic cabling
-
Use testing equipment to ensure existing and new copper and fiber cabling pass industry standards

Clean and organize closets and spaces occupied by I.T. following BICSI standards

Remains current with telecommunications industry standards and principles through regular review and study of technical journals, periodicals, and textbooks, attending training on troubleshooting and installation policies, practices, and procedures

Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Educational Credentials
-
A high school diploma or equivalent is required; an Associate’s degree or completion of college courses equivalent to an Associate’s degree with an emphasis in Telecommunications or Electronics is preferred

Current BICSI certification required

Current valid driver’s license required
Work Experience
-
Minimum of three (3) years of low voltage cable installation/maintenance required; five (5) years preferred
-
Demonstrated experience with working on medium to large construction projects
-
Experience with Ekahau equipment to complete surveys
-
Experience with repair of Code Blue devices
Skills
-
Ability to install fiber optic and low voltage data cables indoors and out

Ability to complete wireless surveys

Ability to repair Code Blue devices

Ability to read and analyze test results from a fluke copper/fiber verification tester, as well as the ability to read and analyze results from a fiber optic OTDR

Ability to read blueprints

Ability to design, install, manage, and test small to medium sized projects from start to finish on campus by oneself with minimal help

Ability to terminate fiber optic cable

Ability to terminate copper data cables

Ability to test existing and new fiber or copper data cables using provided equipment

Ability to coordinate work in a construction environment

Ability to plan and work independently and as a team member

Ability to organize work, handle multiple tasks, and meet timelines in a multi-project environment

Ability to use power and specialty tools such as drills, saws and lifts
Physical Demands

This position requires climbing ladders, lifting materials, working in tunnels, manholes, ceilings, etc. and regular use of small hand tools, testing equipment and specialty equipment such as lifts. Must be able to work in noisy switch rooms, hot, moist, and dirty tunnels and manholes, and environments that are cold, windy, and undesirable for long-term exposure

This position requires work in various locations, such as construction areas, labs, etc., and in close quarters in tunnels and cross connect rooms. Regular sustained mental concentration and considerable physical effort is required
