Under the direction of the Dean of Institutional Research and Planning, the Director of Institutional Research serves as a steward of data and information, including assurance of reliability, validity, and security of institutional data, data collection, and analysis; assists with assessment and evaluation, helps to identify information needs; facilitates any necessary collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting of data and information; and fosters the education of information producers, users, and consumers; and oversees/supervises the work of other institutional research staff as directed. The Director of Institutional Research will also support the college’s mission, vision, and strategic direction within an organizational culture that increasingly embraces data-informed decision-making at all levels, and furthers student access, equity, retention, completion rates, and success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Administer a comprehensive institutional research (IR) program that includes the completion of state and federal reports needed for decision-making related to student success, policy formation, the assessment of student learning, accreditation, enrollment management, and institutional planning and effectiveness. Effectively communicate the results of IR activities using appropriate electronic and other methods

  • Work closely with Academic and Student Affairs leadership to provide research, review, analysis, interpretation and reporting of a variety of data and information needed for planning and decision-making and determining implications of college practices, policies, measures and procedures

  • Provide leadership for the coordination, design, and implementation of specific research studies and surveying efforts collaborating with appropriate college staff and coordinating the development/implementation of survey research projects that are outsourced including CCSSE, SENSE, and Noel-Levitz

  • Oversee the development and updating of institutional and external environmental resources and databases essential for informing the college's planning, continuous quality improvement, assessment, and decision-making processes

  • Develops and implements processes for collecting, linking, and analyzing data from a variety of sources, including internal systems, state and federal agencies, other higher education systems, and employers

  • Oversee the daily supervision of the institutional research function, including providing leadership and supervision of regular and temporary staff assigned to the office. Participate in the hiring of staff, perform ongoing and annual performance appraisals and provide leadership for staff professional development 

  • Integrate accountability measures, learning outcomes data, and other survey and study data to provide a comprehensive reporting and analyses on institutional effectiveness including the establishment of college-wide indicators

  • Through continued study and participation in professional organizations, maintain an understanding and working knowledge of current ideas, research and practices related to institutional research and institutional effectiveness 

  • Lead and participate on collaborative cross-functional teams as required to support essential College processes and functions

  • The Director reports to the Dean of Institutional Research and Planning and is a member of the Deans’ Council, the Strategic Leadership Team, and the Academic Governing Council

  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position

  • Performs other related duties as assigned


JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Educational Credentials

  • Master’s degree in statistics; educational research; higher education administration with a specific focus or credential in institutional research; a behavioral or social science or other scientific/analytic field which includes coursework in statistics, research design and analysis, assessment and program evaluation techniques, and survey methods; or a closely related field required.  PhD strongly preferred

Work Experience

  • Minimum five years’ prior experience in designing and conducting research, including data extraction and analysis or statistical work in the collection, compilation, and analysis of data. Higher educational institutional research experience strongly preferred

  • Extensive knowledge of and proficiency with qualitative and quantitative research design, statistical analysis using SPSS, SAS, Excel or other data analysis programs, visual presentation of data, program evaluation and outcomes assessment, ability to use computers in data collection and analysis required

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills.  The ability to present research information to a broad constituency is essential  

  • Ability to deal effectively with administrators, faculty, staff, community representatives and the public

  • Supervisory experience highly desirable

  • Must be able to attend functions off campus and work weekends/evenings as required. Professional travel required
