Under the administrative direction of the Director of Institutional Research and College Data Officer, the Data Warehouse Architect oversees the design, implementation, and maintenance of the data warehouses, data marts, and data stores for Grand Rapids Community College. This position will ensure the data warehouse is optimized for performance, available, secure, and scalable to meet the strategic needs of the organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Leads the development and implementation of data warehouses, data marts, and data stores

  • Participate in design sessions to design ETL solutions for loading the data warehouse

  • Implements and maintains the data warehouse architecture, ensuring data is organized in a logical and efficient manner

  • Investigates and successfully incorporates new data into existing warehouse structures as needed

  • Defines data standards and models for warehouse architectures

  • Plans and executes change management processes for any data artifacts

  • Creates and maintains data models and schemas that support reporting and analytics

  • Monitors the performance of the data warehouse and optimizes its design for maximum efficiency

  • Utilizes High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for MSSQL server to assess and ensure optimized data warehouse functionality

  • Applies index management to operational speed of databases to increase performance

  • Plans and implements capacity and resource expansion to ensure data warehouse scalability

  • Troubleshoots and resolves any issues with the data warehouse, ETL processes, or reporting tools

  • Collaborates cross-functionally to understand the organization's requirements for data and reporting to develop solutions that meet strategic goals

  • Identifies inefficiencies and gaps in current data warehouse usage and works with stakeholders to increase utilization

  • Ensures the security, quality, integrity, accuracy, and privacy of data in the warehouse

  • Stays up-to-date with industry trends and best practices for data warehousing and analytics 

  • Assists in, develops, coordinates, and implements research, evaluation, and planning projects as assigned that include best practices in data disaggregation to highlight gaps for GRCC stakeholder data-informed decision-making

  • Supports departmental and institutional efforts related to data governance

  • Provides training to the campus community as appropriate on responsible usage of the data warehouse

  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and collaborative working relationships with other analysts in the Institutional Research department, college, community, and agency partners

  • Serves on college-wide teams or committees as appropriate

  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position

  • Performs other related duties as assigned


JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Educational Credentials

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field is required

  • 1-3 years of experience in data warehousing, including design, implementation, and maintenance is required

  • National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) preferred

Work Experience

  • 2+ years of experience architecting data warehousing and business intelligence solutions

  • 2+ years of experience developing normalized and dimensional data models (logical and physical) to support reporting and analytics

  • Experience in troubleshooting resolving database problems

  • Experience in implementing operational automation using scripts

  • Experience with MSSQL Server Database Administration, Tuning, Management, and Security

  • Advanced knowledge of SQL server/oracle development including database design and stored procedures

  • Advanced knowledge of ETL development

  • Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Experience implementing data warehousing/business intelligence solutions in an SQL environment preferred

  • 2+ years of experience with Peoplesoft Campus Solutions preferred
