The Staff Accountant will perform various detail-focused accounting activities involving the reconciliation of high-volume transactional information, but also be able to analyze accounting data. For all functions the expectation will be to independently follow up on any discrepancies and questions that may arise. The individual should therefore consistently work with precision, have problem solving abilities, and also fully understand GAAP accounting principles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  • Reconcile high volume transactional activity to general ledger

  • Approve disbursements to vendors

  • Prepare journal entries to allocate charges

  • Reconcile and prepare journal entries for operational charges

  • Review daily cash reports

  • Reconcile Foundation bank account (monthly) and the Foundation investment account (quarterly), follow up on discrepancies and prepare related journal entries

  • Reconcile assigned College bank accounts (monthly)

  • Prepare monthly sales tax reports

  • Monitor financial activity (leases, rents, commission payments, etc.) for auxiliary services contractors

  • Approve various services invoices and determine proper account distribution

  • Prepare financial reports for the Foundation’s Management and Board of Directors

  • Prepare schedules and related analysis for the annual Foundation external audit

  • Serve as backup for and run full weekly check issuance for AP occasionally

  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position

  • Performs other related duties as assigned


JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Educational Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required

Work Experience 

  • Experience in a non-profit, governmental or education accounting position preferred

Skills

  • Proficient in a Windows environment

  • Ability to use MS Excel extensively

  • Working knowledge of the Campus Wide Information System

  • Demonstrated ability with accounting, internet, spreadsheet, and MS Word

  • Successful experience working with diverse populations

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

  • Ability to think critically, work independently and prioritize work
