Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the Director of Media Technologies provides administrative leadership to the I.T. Media Technologies Department, a department within the Division of Information Technology. This position oversees the design, installation, maintenance and support of GRCC’s multimedia presentation technologies, video production, cable broadcast, streaming, live event support, and media engineering services. Responsibilities include supporting instruction, events and staff development by providing competent and creative audio-video technologies. This position manages the infrastructure budget which includes staff, professional development, hardware maintenance and related contractual services. As part of the IT Leadership Team, the Director must effectively communicate and collaborate with leadership, faculty, and staff across the College to support strong partnerships between IT and the campus community.  The Director represents the Division of Information Technology on College committees and working groups, ensuring that IT is positioned to meet the current and future needs of GRCC.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supervise staff and students within the IT Media Technologies department

  • Provide leadership for our involvement in regional and statewide initiatives, activities, partnerships and organizations

  • Plan and administer budget for the purchase of all materials and equipment for the Media Technologies department, including college wide media, multimedia in classrooms, video content distribution, and audio systems

  • Develop job descriptions, interview, recommend for hire, and evaluate direct reports

  • Collaborate with academic areas to assure a system that encourages the use of technology for learning

  • Participate in college teams that deal with technology and learning 

  • Work with colleagues in departments throughout the campus concerning media needs, multimedia planning, equipment and room design and other appropriate technology requirements and standards

  • Encourage and facilitate an environment where media professionals and other staff can participate and become involved in new trends and innovations in the field of Media Technologies

  • Work on departmental goals, strategic planning and continuous quality improvement activities with media staff

  • Capacity for appreciating the big picture of community and institutional needs and how the department’s resources can help meet those needs

  • Develop and maintain departmental IT procedures and contribute to IT Division and GRCC policies

  • Contribute to and provide leadership in the creation and review of the Division of Information Technology service catalog, goals, priorities, and strategic plan

  • Participate in the development and maintenance of the disaster recovery plan for the College’s computing and telecommunications infrastructure

  • Regular attendance during normal scheduled hours is required. Being present is essential for serving customers and performing the essential functions of this position

  • Performs other related duties as assigned


JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Educational Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in a media related field or commensurate experience in a variety of media areas (classroom technology support, video production, department management) required

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a variety of media areas required.  Experience within an educational setting preferred

  • Experience in media budget management, equipment specifications and technology purchases

  • Successful experience working with diverse populations and supervision of creative and technical staff

  • Proven background in providing friendly and helpful customer service

  • Must possess valid Michigan driver’s license

Skills

  • Possess up-to-date professional technical skills including Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Suite and a variety of streaming/conferencing applications

  • Understanding and working knowledge of College’s budget and purchasing processes

  • Excellent interpersonal and phone skills with ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written, to assist students and staff in a professional manner

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships and to effectively work as a member of a team

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, and solve problems quickly in high stress situations

  • Exhibit professional behavior and judgment when handling sensitive information, assuring confidentiality

  • Ability to use good judgment to resolve problems in a timely manner by collecting, analyzing, collaborating, and utilizing data for decisions while being responsive to change as needed.)

Physical Demands

  • Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs, work at heights adjusting lights/cables, accurate vision to determine focus, resolution and color of images, and good hearing to discern audio quality in venues and on productions

Mental Demands

  • Patience required for meeting tight deadlines, last minute requests and the general quirkiness of technology

Working Conditions

  • Working space is typical office environment as well as media studio and multiple event venues around campus

  • Occasional travel required for events and production and for attending professional conferences
