Question
How do I export my course from Blackboard and import it into Canvas?

Note: Blackboard access ends August 19, 2025. Starting August 20, all courses will be hosted in Canvas. Faculty, staff, and students will no longer have access to Blackboard.
Note: IT has been migrating semester-based courses on a rolling basis beginning with the Summer 2024 semester. If you need a course from prior to that date, or if you need to export a template, organization, or portfolio, follow the instructions below.
Export Existing Course from Blackboard
- Navigate to the course you intend to export.
- In the Course Management menu, locate the Control Panel.
- Under Packages and Utilities, click Export/Archive Course.
- On the Export/Archive Course page, click Export Package.
- Under Select Course Materials, choose the materials you wish to export or click Select All.
- Click Submit.
Download Course Package
- You will receive an email from Blackboard once the course export is complete.
- Return to the Export/Archive Course page in Blackboard and click Refresh.
- The export
.zip file will appear under File Name.
- Click the link for the export file and save it to your computer.
Import Course Package to Canvas
- Open the Canvas course where you want to import the content.
- Click Settings in the course navigation menu.
- Click Import Course Content on the right-hand sidebar.
- For Content Type, select Blackboard 6/7/8/9 export .zip file from the dropdown menu.
- Click Choose File and upload the Blackboard export
.zip file you saved earlier.
- Select All Content (or Select specific content if you only want certain materials).
- Click Import.
