Renaming a Computer

Used when renaming an existing system for a new user, this process must be done while logged in as an administrator.

Renames are done for a few reasons. Primarily, to avoid Active Directory trust relationship errors caused by multiple machines having the same name.

Process

Reminder: User changing the computer name locally must be logged in as an admin to do so. 

  1. Open the Run dialog box (WIN+R)
  2. Type the following: systempropertiesadvanced
  3. Enter your Admin credentials
  4. Navigate to the first tab, Computer Name
  5. Select the bottom option, Change
  6. Enter the new computer name and select OK
  7. Restart the computer
