Information

Note: Google Drive File Stream's name is changing to Google Drive for desktop.

With Drive File Stream, you can:

  • Quickly see Drive files in Finder/Explorer.
  • Browse and organize Drive files without downloading all of them to your computer.
  • Choose which files or folders you'd like to make available offline.
  • Open files in common apps like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop.

Install

  1.  Follow this link: https://support.google.com/drive/answer/7329379
  2. Click Download & Install Drive for Desktop
  3. Choose your operating system.
  4. Follow on-screen instructions.

 

General Use Help

Accessing your Files

  1. Click the Google Drive File for desktop Menu (Pictured below)
  2. Click Open Google Drive Folder in the top of the menu, next to your name.

 

Save a file for offline use

  1. Click the Google Drive for desktop MenuDrive File Stream
  2. Click Open Google Drive folderGoogle Drive folder
  3. Right-click the file or folder you want to save offline.
  4. Click Drive for Desktop > Available offline.
  5. Once your file is saved offline, you'll see a green check mark next to it.

 

Change where your files are stored

  1. Click the Google Drive for desktop MenuDrive File Stream
  2. Click MoreMore > Preferences.
  3. Under "Local cached files directory," click Change.
    • On Windows: To change the Drive letter, click the down arrow under "Drive letter."
    • On Mac: To change the Mount point, under "Mount location," click Change.
  4. Choose where you want your files to be stored.
  5. Click Ok.

 

Issues on macOS High Sierra (10.13) or newer

  1. Open Drive for desktop.
  2. At the top left of your screen, go to:Apple menu>System Preferences>Security & Privacy.
  3. Next to "System software from developer 'Google, Inc.' was blocked from loading," click Allow.

 

Change Where Files are Found

To change where Drive File Stream stores data for offline use:

  • Click the Drive For desktop MenuDrive File Stream
  1. Click More:More> Preferences
  2. Under "Local cached files directory," click Change.
    • On Windows: To change the Drive letter, click the down arrow under "Drive letter."
    • On Mac: To change the Mount point, under "Mount location," click Change.
  3. Choose where you want your files to be stored.
  4. Click Ok.

 

How to Pause Syncing

  1. Click the Google Drive for desktop MenuDrive File Stream
  2. Click More:More> Pause syncing.

To resume syncing, click MoreMore> Resume syncing.
